How fetal monitors work

Fetal monitors are cardiotocographs for the effective protection of intrauterine development of a person - taking and studying the fetal heartbeat in dynamics.
Fetal Dopplers for pregnant women help to assess:
  1. Uterine tone and proximity of labor activity.
  2. The number of fetal movements during the registration period.
  3. Basal heart rate.
  4. Heart rate variability.
  5. Amplitude of the motor-cardiac reflex.
The first and second points are relevant at all three stages of pregnancy. The third point is from 16, and sometimes from 11 weeks. The rest of the diagnostic parameters are used from the Ⅲ trimester (32-34 weeks) - the period of final formation of the "activity-rest" cycle, including the myocardial reflex.

How is the fetal heart activity recorded?

The CTG sequence is divided into the following components:
  • The transducer is attached to the woman's anterior abdominal wall.
  • The fetal Doppler generates and directs ultrasound to the projection of the fetal heart.
  • The sound is reflected by red blood cells (Doppler effect).
  • The analytical unit detects the signals of the fetal heart.
  • The information is interpreted in the form of light, sound, digital signals and graphically.

Monitoring features

For CTG in a calm state, active fetal movements and maximum heart rate variability are preferred.
In labor, the main criterion is the fetal cardiac response to contractions.

Types of fetal monitors

The catalog of the online store Medigo.com.ua contains 3 types of fetal dopplers:
  • Stationary ones provide comprehensive monitoring of the fetal condition in a hospital setting, giving doctors access to detailed diagnostic information.
  • Portable - compact devices for use at home or in mobile medical teams.
  • Wireless - mobile Dopplers that run on batteries. The simplicity of the interface allows a pregnant woman to monitor the fetus's condition on her own. For example, Heaco models even allow you to hear the baby's heartbeat.

Main features and characteristics of fetal monitors

Here are some modern cardiotocography features that greatly simplify and expand medical and home analysis:
  • Information storage. The systems provide recording and archiving of the obtained indicators for further analysis.
  • Various visualization. Displays offer different formats of data presentation, which facilitates their interpretation.
  • Analytical capabilities. Built-in algorithms automatically analyze the collected information.
  • Ecosystems. Integration with additional medical systems is provided, creating a single information space.

How to choose a fetal monitor: key criteria

Here are the main aspects of choosing a Doppler for pregnant women:
  • Purpose of the device. Determine for whom you are choosing the equipment: medical institutions (hospitals and clinics), private practice of doctors, or home use by future parents.
  • Manufacturer and compliance with standards. MediGo offers to purchase Dopplers for pregnant women only from proven and reliable manufacturers. Each product has industry certificates confirming the quality and safety of the device.
  • Additional features. Specialized software for data analysis, a mobile application for convenient use, and computer synchronization functions for storing and processing results increase the level of monitoring.
